Pops on the River 2022: Broadway Returns
Every year the Reno Philharmonic hosts an event known as Pops on the River. At this event, the orchestra preforms music pieces tied to the theme selected for that designated year. This event is a fundraiser for the Reno Phil, as well as music programs they sponsor dedicated to youth in the community. In 2022, the Pops theme was Broadway Returns. A dynamic comeback show after the COVID-19 Pandemic that included tunes from Broadway’s top titles.
The main promotional piece in this project was poster design. The challenge with this theme was putting together a composition that represented a wide range of Broadway shows into one singular idea. Our solution was to build a poster set, each dedicated to three of Broadway’s biggest titles: The Lion King, Phantom of the Opera, and Chicago.
I used an illustrative style to tie in instruments used within these musicals and the Reno Philharmonic Orchestra. The instruments act as the scene to iconic imagery from each musical. The Lion King features a pride rock djembe, the Chicago poster is a jazzy piano with the Chicago skyline as the keys, and finally the Phantom of the Opera poster uses a violin, portraying the Phantom and Christine’s ill fated relationship.
The scope of this project included logo design, poster design, digital ads & social media, print collateral, and name badges.
